Reflection

1.     1.   A lot more came out of this course than expected so I would say my expectations were definitely met.

2.     2.   I believe art is a lot of things – it’s simply beauty. Art is in everything, regardless of wether or not everyone chooses to see it.

3.      3.  Pablo Picasso was my original favorite artist and that still remains the same – I believe I have just learned to understand and respect his art in a different way.

4.     4.   I did not enjoy taking an online course, it was unbelievably difficult for myself and I think I would have succeeded in the course had it been in person. This would be my first and last online course.

Art Analysis Project

1.     1.   This work of art shows extreme emotion. The faces of the people are completely devastated. This painting also has a lot of use of line within it. The values between the people, the background and the images inbetween are strong and show a huge difference, almost as if there are multiple layers to the piece.

2.        2. This piece was an oil on canvas painting using the colors grey, black and white.

3.     3.   Guernica was painted during the time of the Spanish Civil War and it is a political piece of art. It was painted after the Germans had devastatingly bombed the Spanish city of Guernica.  Some symbols within this art is the bull that reminds viewers of the Spanish bull. And the horse probably represents the Spanish citizens that were scared, as the horse looks.

4.        4. The expressions on the faces of the people and animals evoke an emotional response because their fear in the faces are strong and concerning. Also, the lack of actual color makes the viewer feel the emptiness and sadness of the piece.

5.      5.  Strengths of the work: the line definition brings a strong separation throughout the work, like the separation during the Spanish civil war. Weaknesses: I believe if there was slight color added, not a lot, it would bring a very strong emphasis to parts of the work, making it even more emotional.
1.      1.  The West Coast Pop Art Video:
Lowbrow art – hard to categorize but a form of art, thought to be a reaction against highbrow culture. Lowbrow was seen as “lacking of taste”. Paintings included naked women and hot rods. Originally meant pornography. Some say it’s like pop surrealism. It’s origin was in the 1960’s.

Tate Modern Video:

Modern art museum with five million visitors a year. Interactive events happen in the art. It’s contempary art. “Temple of the far art” Tate Modern represents a social change. Contempary art became more valued because of Tate Modern. Wolff Olins, the creater, utilized the space very well. People had a personal and collective experience.

2.      2.  The video of Tate Modern helped me realize I wanted to do the unique medium as my choice of theme for my exhibit for the project.

3.   3.    I really enjoyed the films. I had never heard of the term “low brow” because and it was interesting to see a name put to that form of art and the history behind it. And watching the Tate Modern video made me realize how big of an effect art has on culture and people.
